Irish myths and legends
This term, we are aiming at improving our students' reading skills in Bernardo de Balbuena, and the bilingual programme is programming activities to do so. One of them has led students from the third year to perform short plays in English after having read the book All about Britain, by Burlington books.
One of the chapters in the book deals with Irish myths and legends. Thus, the students organised in four groups and wrote a script for a short play about one of the myths included in the book. The four myths and legends were The Children of Lir, Changelings, The Banshee and The Dadga's Harp. Then, they memorised and rehearsed these plays so that they could perform them at the assembly hall, which they finally did in the final lesson of this learning situation.
Now, they are going to continue working with this topic in Art, as they will be designing and drawing outfits for the different characters involved in these mythical stories they have made up.
It was a brilliant experience for all of them, who had the chance of presenting on stage some stories which they had written themselves.
With this learning situation, they were able to improve not only their reading skills, but also their writing and speaking ones, with the activities they had to do after reading the book. And who knows, they might go back on stage to act once more this school year...
